WAIMEA — Moku O Kohala, the Kohala chapter of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I, in partnership with Na Poki’i, Inc., a Hawaiian non-profit 501c3 organization, will host the 2018 Scholarship Fundraiser Concert at Kahilu Town Hall in Waimea June 16.
Penny Vredenburg will one again be the event’s master of ceremonies.
Doors will open at 11 a.m. for a preview of silent auction items. The concert will begin at 11:45 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m. An opening hula presentation will be led by Hula Halau o Kawananakoa of Hilo under the leadership of Kumu Alberta Nicolas.
The first half of the concert will be an old time jam session of Hawaiian music provided by the slack key stylings and ukulele artistry of Sonny Lim, Peter Moon Jr., David Ka’io, Kevin Brown and Kunia Galdeira, accompanied by bassist Keola Grace.
Food and refreshments will be available for purchase before the concert and during intermission. The end of intermission will mark the close of the silent auction items. After intermission the concert will continue with another presentation by Hula Halau O Kawananakoa. Featured entertainment for the second half will be the sweet sounds of two of Hawaii’s eminent female vocalists: Darlene Ahuna and Ku’uipo Kumukahi — a double dose of aloha and talent.
This will be the sixth annual scholarship fund-raiser. All proceeds go to benefit students from the Kohala district who need financial assistance to further their education. Last year, 12 scholarships were given. This year, Moku O Kohala aims to raise enough funds to at least match or beat it.
Tickets are available from members of Moku O Kohala with a suggested donation of $30, and will also be available at the door. Seating will be on a first come, first served basis.
For ticket sales or questions call Maha at 937-6380 or e-mail kakaukii@hawaiiantel.net.
Independent donations are accepted to Na Poki’i, Inc. and are tax deductible.
